It’s unbelievable how many women struggle with binge eating and emotional eating who never ask for help!
They feel like reaching out for help would be to finally admit that they’re “broken” or simply “not good enough” or “smart enough” to fix it on their own.
So they never reach out for help…never fix their struggles…and suffer in silence for years!
Know this… EVERYBODY develops destructive and compulsive habits!
Some people can never admit they’re wrong and never apologise because it feels like a sign of weakness.
Some people bite their nails.
Some people can’t stop worrying about anything and everything.
Some people get angry at everything.
You just happen to binge eat.
That doesn’t make you flawed or defective or broken. It doesn’t mean you’re not enough. It doesn’t have anything to do with your self worth or even your identity.
It’s simply a learned behaviour and nobody has ever taught you how to rewire these habits effectively.
In order for you to be able to do that, it’s vital that you switch from a FIXED mindset to a GROWTH mindset.
A fixed mindset is where you believe that you’re either enough or you’re not. That’s just who you are and you’re stuck that way.
When you have a fixed mindset you’re terrified of getting any proof that you might not be enough. You become terrified of failure, you never ask for help and you try to do everything on your own.
A growth mindset is where you realise that we are all constantly growing and evolving. If you struggle with a particular area of your life you don’t take it personally, you simply recognise that you have more to learn if you want better results.
So you try new things, fully commit, and ask for help.
I spent much of my 20’s struggling with chronic stress, overwhelm and frankly, debilitating perfectionism. I was a workaholic, my significance and self worth wrapped up in overachieving and being busy. I had a fear of being judged as lazy or stupid.
I gave myself a lot of self-inflicted health issues including burnout or “adrenal fatigue”; hormonal disruption, out of control IBS and made myself very ill for a lengthy period of time.
My story of “personal growth” from this point forward was fairly colourful including learning meditation from a monk, searching for my spirit animal while a shaman banged a drum around my head and then finally embarking on more structured behavioural change!
Every time I’ve felt stuck or unable to grow my business to the next level on my own I’ve invested in expert help and mentoring.
Even as a parent I’ve invested in expert help in how to parent, how to help my little boy with his sleep, and how to influence his behaviour in healthy ways.
Not knowing how to fix chronic stress, how to scale my business, or how to teach my baby to self settle didn’t make me “flawed, broken, or inadequate!” It simply meant I had more to learn!
You don’t know what you don’t know, so start asking questions.
Rather than waste years of stress, struggle, and confusion, I chose to hire expert help. I fixed the problems quickly and grew to the next level quickly. (yes – with hard work!)
How is binge eating any different? Everybody has their “stuff”. This just happens to be yours. Let’s stop hiding in shame and start taking ownership.
If you take FULL ownership, then you don’t hide and try to fix it yourself! You take full ownership for finding the most effective way to fix the problem.
