Female Trainers are missing this ONE thing to to have the impact they crave and the results their clients deserve!
It must be your education, right? Sure, your education and expertise as a PT is critical. If you’re not investing in ongoing education every year then you will be left behind, you become a stale PT, client service suffers and you’re not thinking like a business owner.
However, the “science” or “technical knowhow” is NOT the primary barrier I see that consistently holds female PTs back from having the impact, the transformations, the financial rewards, the ideal clients, and the working hours they wish they could have.
Neither is it because you don’t look like a WBFF fitness model.
The primary barrier? CONFIDENCE & SELF WORTH!
You can be technically an amazing trainer but unless you have the confidence to get out there your skills are being wasted and clients are being robbed of yet another fantastic female trainer.
Let’s be honest, there is a LOT of scope for a female PT to get intimidated in the fitness industry.
In the eloquent words of metallica, “the empty can rattles the most!”
And the fitness industry has no shortage of highly opinionated empty cans looking to make some noise! As well as plenty of other trainers who have a few book smarts, maybe even a degree or two, but have monstrously fragile egos and desperately seek self worth by trying to look smarter than they really are.
Then you’ve got a relatively male dominated environment, and if you’re a female PT working in a commercial gym, surrounded by young, testosterone fueled guys, sorry but you CANNOT be a delicate wallflower!
You’ve got to learn to stand up for yourself. You’ve got to know when to have harmless banter and give as good as you get, as well as nip any inappropriate behaviour in the bud and not take any shit.
Then you’ve got marketing yourself online – The fear of being shot down, discredited, judged for being too muscular, too fat, too skinny, not pretty enough, the wrong hair length, not looking the part, etc.
Then if we throw into the mix any issues that you’re struggling with behind the scenes like binge eating or emotional eating, then we’ve just opened up a whole can of worms and made these issues exponentially worse.
With food issues, not only do you have the existing challenges, you’ve also got feelings of being an imposter, not practicing what you preach, and feeling like a fraud. (See our previous article on “The Dirty Little Secret of The Fitness Industry”.)
Look, you can attend all the courses in the world…. You can learn more and more about your craft (something you MUST already be doing anyway as I’ve already mentioned). You could be learning all about internet marketing, and working with business coaches every year…
BUT until you address the lack of self worth and self confidence, what do you think the chances are of you EVER succeeding at the level you want?
In very simple terms you’ve got an internal conflict that’s sabotaging your success every day.
On the one hand you value succeeding, providing an amazing client service, being recognised, financially rewarded, and having more control over who you work with, working hours, and more freedom.
On the other hand you have a fear of being rejected, criticised, humiliated, or not being enough.
You have currently got one foot on the accelerator and one on the brake.
So what’s the solution?
Well for a lot of men they fight pain with pain. Some of the men in our industry also have a fear of being rejected and criticised. These are the guys with monstrously fragile egos, who take EVERY disagreement online personally, and constantly have something to prove.
But they also have a massive fear of not being successful.
As queen Brene Brown says, the most common area of shame for women is body image. For men it’s appearing weak. I would also add that for a lot, if not most men, their self worth is often tied into appearing successful – especially financially.
So for guys, if they fear being rejected, but they fear looking like a financial and business failure MORE, then they’ll battle through the pain and take lots of action. They’ll be HIGHLY stressed and get into LOTS of altercations, but if they have a high tolerance for pain they can succeed that way. At least financially. But often at the expense of their health, their relationships, and their happiness.
Of course women can do it this way too, but it’s less common. I was one of those women….I didn’t get into too many altercations but I did always feel the need to “defend” myself or prove my point. In my early career my self-worth was MASSIVELY tied to feeling like an overachiever. I was a perfectionist, control freak and created a monstrous amount of stress for myself. My health suffered. Several bouts of adrenal fatigue/burnout, raging, chronic IBS, compromised immunity, poor thyroid health… the list is endless and boring.
Based on this – the first possible solution is to fight pain with pain. You’re afraid of rejection, but you’re afraid of being a business failure even more. It can work. I did it. Good luck though, it’s a painful slow process that comes at a cost. I wish I knew then what I know now!
The second solution is INFINITELY easier. This is the solution that took me years of personal development, and investing in myself personally to discover. It’s also the same solution we teach our ladies in Chase Life.
It’s to eliminate the fear of being judged. Wouldn’t this whole thing be so much easier if you were unaffected by other people’s opinions? Oh and despite the years of battling through, it was ONLY at this point where my business grew exponentially. When I stopped giving a fuck what others thought and just did me.
When your self-worth is constantly under threat from external forces, you’re constantly in survival mode, and constantly trying to protect yourself.
When you learn TRUE self worth and inner confidence you have emotional freedom.
– You make bold decisions with ease that drive your life and your business forwards.
– You no longer overthink or second guess your decisions.
– You put yourself and your message out there to be seen.
– You don’t shrink or censor your message in an attempt to avoid being judged or criticised (leading to a boring AF brand that serves no one).
– You don’t wait to be perfect or look perfect before fully committing to helping the people you’re here to serve.
Most importantly your entire motivation now comes from what you’re passionate about building and what truly excites and inspires you. Instead of FEAR!
In short – you get shit done and you have fun doing it!
Trust me, I’ve been on both sides of the equation. Not only is it fun and enjoyable on this side, business success is exponentially greater and you can help more clients at a better level. Everyone wins.
If you want to have more success, more control over your business, finances, and working hours, have more impact AND enjoy the journey, then addressing your issues with self worth and confidence MUST be your number 1 priority.
