How willpower makes binge and emotional eating worse

Posted on June 9, 2020

Do you ever feel like the harder you try to get a grip on your food issues the worse they get?

Does it ever feel like the only way you can get the food cravings and urges to disappear is to just give in to them?

WILLPOWER IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CULPRITS HERE. IT ACTUALLY MAKES YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD WORSE, NOT BETTER.

HERE’S WHY…

Don’t think of a black cat…

Whoops! Too late! It’s already jumped into your mind, right?!

You see your mind doesn’t understand “negatively stated” instructions. Which means trying NOT to do something.

Willpower is built on the principle of NOT doing something.

“Don’t think about chocolate, don’t eat chocolate, don’t think about what you’re missing out on, resist, resist, resist!”

Your entire brain is consumed with what you DON’T want. So it has no idea what you actually DO want! You haven’t given it a clear out come.

In fact, your brain thinks that chocolate IS the outcome. Ever heard of athletes using visualisation or mental rehearsal to programme high performance? When they vividly imagine a particular outcome it essentially programmes their unconscious mind to think, operate, and perform in that way.

By using willpower you’re actually using mental rehearsal to programme your unconscious mind to do the very thing you DON’T WANT!!! You’re vividly imagining what you DON’T WANT!

On top of that, willpower is a conscious activity. You have to constantly, and relentlessly think about it. Which is exhausting!

Eventually you can’t keep it up and the moment you switch your brain off for a second you suddenly find yourself mindlessly doing the very behaviour you told yourself NOT to do.

Or the cravings get so bad (because willpower is making them worse and worse) that you try to take the edge off by giving yourself “just a taste”. And we all know where that leads!!

So it’s vital that you start learning the language of your unconscious mind so that you can rewire the old habits. The first step is to start getting clarity on what you DO want, instead of what you DON’T want.

In the first week of Chase Life you’ll learn in detail how the brain works and how the brain learns compulsive behaviours like binge eating. We schedule your first 1 to 1 coaching call at the end of week one and on that call we’ll coach you how to stop using willpower, and how to relate to the cravings and urges in a way that causes them to rapidly get weaker and weaker, and then disappear altogether.

This is the first step to eliminating binge eating – targeting the habit itself – how it is stored in the brain and how to rewire that piece of code.

The second step – which we coach you through in weeks 2 and 3 – is to eliminate the unresolved emotional issues that caused binge eating in the first place and continue to sustain it.

For example, for some people binge eating is the only way their brain knows how to reliably switch off and get a sense of release. It enables them to zone out and “not think” for a while. Whenever the stress, overwhelm, or emotional struggles reach a certain threshold it’s like a part of them “takes over”.

Once this behaviour has been repeated enough times it gets hardwired as a habit. Which is why we must target both the habit itself AND the underlying emotional patterns in order to FULLY and PERMANENTLY overcome binge eating and emotional eating.

THAT’S why nothing worked for you in the past. If you try to fix this problem with only one piece of the puzzle then of course it’s not going to work! And you’ll continue to struggle for years and years. You don’t know what you don’t know!

So just because you’ve never fixed this problem before, doesn’t mean you can’t. It just means that you had an incomplete approach, or worse a flawed approach that only exacerbates things – like willpower!

That’s also why fixing these issues is so fast when you have the right approach.

So much struggle eliminated with a simple distinction! As they say “it’s easy when you know how!” That’s why our clients go from decades of struggle and feeling like they’ve tried “everything” to complete freedom from binge eating and emotional issues with food in less than 8 weeks.
